Famed Chinese director is facing a $164 million (1 billion yuan) lawsuit after being accused of violating China's one-child policy, according to The Verge.

The director of and Flowers of War has admitted to fathering three children with his wife along with another child with his ex-wife. This admission came following speculation that he had actually fathered seven children. Zhang Yimou also oversaw the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and this news has been met with fresh calls to abolish China's one-child policy, which was first implemented back in 1979.

The lawyers who have filed the suit against Zhang are said to be looking for punitive damages. It's also been claimed that the lawyers are using the case as an example to illustrate how unfair law enforcement is when the richer people in society don't have to abide by the one-child policy.

Zhang has apologised for what has happened, and has said that he and his wife will cooperate with any form of investigation.
