First Peak at the Highly-Anticipated “Attack on Titan”

Attack-on-Titan

“Attack on the Titan” is coming to the big screen, gracing us with not one but two movies, both to hit the theaters this year. In our previous news article, we were only able to share the set of official posters. However, today, we finally get to see more of this much-awaited though heatedly-debated Japanese live action film!

” Teaser: What We Think

The thirty-second teaser breezes through the characters and the plot, so if you are not very familiar with the series, you might have a difficult time making sense out of anything or trying to spot characters. We will break down the teaser's content below, but be warned! There are some spoilers included. Well, spoilers if you haven't read a portion of the manga or watched the first few episodes of the anime version.

At the very least, this is what we can tell you: the movie adaptation of is looking fierce.

From the start, we get a refresher as the narrator shares the origin of the walled kingdom where the protagonist, Eren Yeager (alternative, Eren Jeager, played by ) and his family live and the titans (3- to 15-meter tall monsters that devour human upon sight) who threaten their existence.

Immediately, the trailer jumps into action as it showcases numerous clips that feature the different characters during the crumbing of outer Wall Maria, which pushed Eren to join the military force, specifically the Survey Corps division, and the fall of middle Wall Rose at which point he's already part of the 104th Training Squad.

In the teaser, the first character given focus is a member of the Training Squad, screaming wildly. It then went on to give a glimpse of other characters in quick succession. There's the man who wields his 3D maneuver gear blade under the moonlight. There's Hange Zoe (Satomi Ishihara), with her arms raised and mouth agape in awe. Then there is Eren and Mikasa Ackerman (Kiko Mizuhara) looking upwards, most probably eyeing a titan.

The “Attack on Titan” trailer ends with a view of the Colossal Titan as it smashes the fortress wall, most probably that of Trost District.

Truth be told, this movie trailer is too short to satisfy us. With the rapid transfer of scenes, it's practically impossible to tell who most of the featured characters are. We can say that the screaming soldier is Armin Arlert (Kanata Hongo) or the training soldier is Shikishima (Hiroki Hasegawa) who is labeled as the “world's strongest” (the character replacing Corporal Levi Ackerman), but without seeing the full scenes, we can't really be sure.

Nonetheless, based on the looks of the titan and the overall feel of the teaser, we can expect good chemistry among the actors and passable CGI. We say “passable” not because the titans look ugly but simply that the Japanese CGI still have some way to go before it can catch up with its US counterpart.

The first “Attack on Titan” movie will be initially released on August 1, with sequel coming out on September 19.
