This Zhang Yimou film is one of the director's many collaboration with the lovely Gong Li. Based on the novel Wives and Concubines by Su Tong, it tells the story of a young woman who agreed to be a wealthy man's fourth wife. Complications ensue as bitter rivalries rise between the man's four wives. 's acting in this movie is superb and the movie captures the atmosphere of 1920s China.

 


 

(2004)

3-Iron is relatively new compared to other movies in this selection but it received accolades from various award-giving bodies including Venice International Film Festival, Korean Film Awards, and Busan International Film Festival. This was directed by South Korean director Kim Ki-duk (The Isle) and starred Jae Hee and Lee Seung-yeon.

(1994)

Eat Drink Man Woman is one of 's earlier films and had garnered accolades from the Asia Pacific Film Festival, National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Award, BAFTA, and more.  The film is set in modern day Taiwan and tells the story of three unmarried sisters as they face the challenges of balancing a traditional Chinese culture and modern life.


 

(1953)

Directed by Yasujiro Ozu, this film follows the journey of an aging couple who set off to visit their children in the city. The subdued atmosphere of the film and superb storytelling garnered awards from the British Film Institute Awards and Mainichi Film Concours.


 

(1964)

This classic Japanese film directed by Masaki Kobayashi was given a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1965, as well as a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards. Kwaidan is a collection of ghost stories based on the tales collected by Lafcadio Hearn. The film has a dream-like quality with the intricately-designed sets and great storytelling.
