“Kimi No Na Wa” Anime Tops the Japanese Box Office for 3rd Week in a Row

Kimi No Na Wa is still top of the Japanese box office. The anime film as taken a whopping 6.2 billion yen since it hit Japanese theaters on August 26. The film earned roughly $60 million in three weeks and hopes to finish at $100 million.

Kimi No Na Wa also known as Your Name. is the breakout anime film of the year. An impressive feat for a movie with no TV anime series or popular manga behind it.

Makoto Shinkai’s novel Kimi No Na Wa inspired the script for the hit movie. It is a coming of age story is about two two high school students. Mitsuhe is a mayor’s daughter who wants to live in Tokyo and get out of a small town. Taki on the other hand, lives in Tokyo but wants to live somewhere else. He enjoys fine arts and architecture, he hopes to move to a quieter area like Mitsuhe’s town. The two have more in common than they think. Both want to live life and explore the world.

Ryunosuke Kamiki lends his voice to Taki. Kamiki is known for his role as Seta Sojiro is the live-action Rurouni Kenshin. Japanese actress Mone Kamishiraishi gave her voice for Mitsuhe. Kamishiraishi played the role of Kanade Oe in the live-action film Chihayafuru: Kami no Ku.

Spirited Away‘s Masashi Ando directed the movie with animation by CoMix Wave Films. The anime film is distributed by Toho who is also behind many  Akira Kurosawa and Studio Ghibli films.

Kimi No Na Wa dominates the box office beating Suicide Squad  and Shin Godzilla.
