Maggie Cheung was born on the 20th September 1964, a few years later she and her family moved from Hong Kong to England at the age of 8. She spent the next 10 years in England, going to school and learning English and other subjects before moving back to Hong Kong.
At first, she didn’t intend of staying in Hong Kong as it was only for a vacation, but she soon got into modeling and having that commitment meant she was destined to stay and go forward with her new career. In 1983, she entered the Miss Hong Kong pageant and won the first runner-up and the Miss Photogenic award as well, she was also a semi-finalist in the Miss World pageant the same year.
Her first acting role came in the 1984 movie “Behind the Yellow Line” and she did a few more after that, but it wasn’t until she got the role in the Jackie Chan classic “Police Story” that people really stood up and taken notice of her. In the next few years we would see her team up with Jackie again in movies such as Police Story 2 and Project A part 2, as well as great performances in movies such as As Tears Go By(1988) and The Iceman Cometh (1989). Iceman Cometh shown her in a great light, getting to show her acting skills playing a prostitute who ended up falling in love with Yuen Biao, who traveled in time to capture a fugitive.
In the 90’s, Maggie was in big demand, putting in some great performances prior to this, she then went on to star in movies with some big named actors and directors. Days of Being Wild, Dragon From Russia, Center Stage, Twin Dragons, Police Story 3 and The Bare-Footed Kid taken her to new heights and with the cult films Heroic Trio 1-2, there was no stopping her.
From 2000 onwards, Maggie started to make less movies, she did a few such as Sausalito, delivered great performances in others such as In the Mood for Love, Hero and 2046 and also did a scene for the movie Inglorious Bastards, but was later used only as a deleted scene.
Audiences outside Asia have become increasingly familiar with her work, including Irma Vep, Center Stage, Chinese Box, In the Mood for Love, Hero, 2046 and Clean where she spoke in fluent English, French, and Cantonese. In 2010, she had a small scene in the movie Hot Summer Days, made a short film called Better Life but hasn’t done anything major since, which is a shame. Maggie is a great actress and i would love to see her back in Hong Kong making movies and maybe get to star with Jackie Chan again one day. She could play any role with great conviction weather it would be comedy, drama or action and always gave 100% in any role. She as also won many awards over the years for Best Actress and i hope she comes back and continues to win many more in the future.
In April 2010 she was appointed as UNICEF’s Ambassador to China. In July 2011 Cheung was awarded the degree Doctor honoris causa at the University of Edinburgh, UK.

Personal

As part of her portrayal of recovering drug addict and aspiring singer Emily in Clean, Cheung performed songs written by David Roback of Mazzy Star and Dean Wareham of Dean & Britta .
