Anime Review: I Want to Eat Your Pancreas (2018) by Shinichiro Ushijima

' was released in 2018 and is based on the homotitled manga of Yoru Sumino. It's a dramatic/ coming-of-age film which narrates the story of two completely different people who're seeking happiness and completeness. As they're learning the meaning of love and compassion, they welcome the viewer to a world full of emotional roller coasters and teach him plenty of meaningful things about life.

The plot revolves around Sakura, a young and cheerful girl, who has a fatal pancreatic disease and a short life span. However, she manages to befriend one of her classmates and they spend a lot of time together, living to the fullest. They have a strong chemistry with each other, so romantic love can't help but make an appearance…

'I Want to Eat your Pancreas' is overwhelmed by a sense of vanity, since it makes it clear from the beginning that Sakura doesn't have any survival chances. Yet, even though the audience knows about the upcoming tragic finale, it can't help but love her. After all, she's a wonderful creature full of contrasts, which combines horror and excitement, sadness and happiness, stress and serenity. All these, intensify the bittersweet feelings and help us forget for a moment the serious problem which lays under. And that's genius, because it's exactly how the main heroes feel.

Death's presence is strong in this movie, but the main subject is the exact opposite: Life! It examines how fragile and temporary it is, pointing out the importance of appreciating every single day. Plus, it revolves around ‘the chase of happiness' and narrates how someone can find joy and completeness through inner peace or through fun and communication. One of the main reasons that I love ‘I Want to Eat Your Pancreas', is because of its' realistic-yet-dreamy nature. It's a down to earth movie, but it manages to combine mysterious themes, such as ‘destiny' and ‘soulmates'. Moving on though, it repeatedly mentions how a person's personality is basically dependent on his/her choices and actions. Your thoughts end up becoming You!

‘I Want to Eat your Pancreas' is NOT an usual romantic drama film. No, it's much more! It's a celebration towards love, friendship and life herself. It manages, through its' simplicity, to present a strong and emotional story, full of twist and suspense. But, the most important thing about this film, is the way it portais the teenage soul: chaotic, wild, pure and so unmatched to death!

Moving on to the artwork of the film, it is -without a doubt, excellent. Details, flawless movement, beautiful colors and amazing backgrounds. But, what really catches the eye, is the astonishing lighting which contributes into making everything more magical. When it comes to the soundtrack, it is composed by the talented Hiroko Sebu and it manages to accompany the story perfectly, since its calmness or its intensity depend on the plotline. However, her melodies are accompanied by the voices of some brilliant seiyuus, such as Yukiyo Fujii, Yuma Uchida and Lynn

In conclusion, whoever enjoys anime like “Your Name” or “Your Lie in April”, has to give ‘I Want to Eat Your Pancreas' a chance. It's a charming story which teaches us the importance of appreciation and sharing!
