Japanese Avant-Garde and Experimental Film Festival announces JAEFF 2020: Bodies. A message from the curators.

“Dear JAEFFers,

The sun is shining, the trees in bloom, Easter eggs are all on clearance, the sting of pollen is in your eyes and the parks are alive with the endless pounding footfall of everyone who decided that a global pandemic was the right time to start training for all those indefinitely postponed marathons. Yes, Spring has truly sprung. We do hope that all of our friends and family are physically and psychologically well. We also hope you are not having to self-isolate for several years in a sand pit with a perpetually gritty captor.

At JAEFF Towers (it's like if the architects of Wayne Manor and Stark Tower were told to make an avant-garde office block for £15 and an Ocado delivery slot), preparations continue for September. Of course, should the current situation dictate changes or delays to the festival, announcements will undoubtedly be announced.

But as things currently stand, having delivered two full festival programmes predicated along quite intellectual lines, this year, we're examining the body and sensation. Partly inspired by the now odd-yeared 2021 Tokyo Olympics, we're presenting a line-up of features and shorts that examine the body through performance, sport, exercise, and physicality.

Stay tuned for more information regarding JAEFF 2020: Bodies. Happy, healthy, isolated, JAEFFing”

About the author

Adriana Rosati

On paper I am an Italian living in London, in reality I was born and bread in a popcorn bucket. I've loved cinema since I was a little child and I’ve always had a passion and interest for Asian (especially Japanese) pop culture, food and traditions, but on the cinema side, my big, first love is Hong Kong Cinema. Then - by a sort of osmosis - I have expanded my love and appreciation to the cinematography of other Asian countries. I like action, heroic bloodshed, wu-xia, Shaw Bros (even if it’s not my specialty), Anime, and also more auteur-ish movies. Anything that is good, really, but I am allergic to rom-com (unless it’s a HK rom-com, possibly featuring Andy Lau in his 20s)"
