Virtual Press Conference to Address API Racism and Discrimination in San Diego

  • Local Asian Pacific Islander (API) organizations to discuss impact of COVID-19 on API community through incident reporting data and experiences from community members
  • San Diego Councilmembers Gomez and Montgomery to introduce City Council resolution denouncing xenophobia and anti-Asian racism

WHAT
On Wednesday, May 27, San Diego Asian Pacific Islander (SDAPI) Coalition will host a virtual press conference addressing the increasing racist attacks, discrimination, and xenophobia on the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community. Updated county data will be presented from the Stop AAPI Hate incident form. Members of the community will also speak about their personal experiences with recent racist harassment and threats of physical violence.

Council President Georgette Gomez and Councilmember Monica Montgomery will introduce a City of San Diego resolution addressing the increasing racist incidents against the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community since the wake of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

WHY
Asians, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders represent one out of every seven San Diego County residents and the fastest-growing racial group in the county according to a report from Asian Americans Advancing Justice¹. While COVID-19 poses a threat to the world's health and economic stability, public reaction has led to subsequent harm for specific populations. Many Asian Americans, members from the organizations listed, and local API-owned businesses have reported being a victim of racism and xenophobia.

The proposed resolution will affirm the City of San Diego's commitment to the well-being and safety of API communities.

About the author

Rhythm Zaveri

Hello, my name is Rhythm Zaveri. For as long as I can remember, I've been watching movies, but my introduction to Asian cinema was old rental VHS copies of Bruce Lee films and some Shaw Bros. martial arts extravaganzas. But my interest in the cinema of the region really deepened when I was at university and got access to a massive range of VHS and DVDs of classic Japanese and Chinese titles in the library, and there has been no turning back since.

An avid collector of physical media, I would say Korean cinema really is my first choice, but I'll watch anything that is south-east Asian. I started contributing to Asian Movie Pulse in 2018 to share my love for Asian cinema in the form of my writings.
