Audio Book Review: Solo Leveling (Vol. 1, 2021) by Chugong, Narrated by Ki Hong Lee

Continuing to level-up, the novel that inspired the hit manhwa finds its way to audio

“E-rank hunter Jinwoo Sung has no money, no talent, and no prospects to speak of—and apparently, no luck, either! When he enters a hidden double dungeon one fateful day, he's abandoned by his party and left to die at the hands of some of the most horrific monsters he's ever encountered. But just before the last, fatal blow…” (Hachette Audio)

Establishing itself as an immensely popular title within manhwa, through both original novel series and webtoon adaptation, it is no surprise that “” was chosen as one of the inaugural series to be released by (partnership between Yen press and Hachette Audio). In addition, the project marks the second audio book narrated by Korean-American actor (“Maze Runner” series) putting a recognizable face that aptly falls in line with the targeted audience (Young Adult). So, How does Yen Audio handle their early foray into the world of audio books?

“Solo Leveling” is a title deserved of its cult following. To not retread covered ground, you can read our review of the book to get our thoughts on the release. However, if you are only familiar with the franchise due to the manhwa, rest assured that the novel by is the idyllic manner to approach the series – the author is an immensely talented storyteller in the realm of fantasy. Essentially, the audio book adaptation still brings his wonderful descriptive wordplay, realistic dialogue that makes the fantasy landscape personable and knack for describing action sequences.

Already notable for narrative prowess, the audiobook's success relies on two things; the overall quality of the audio release and narration from Ki Hong Lee. Thankfully both these elements are perfectly executed to best capture the world of “Solo Leveling”. Though a new endeavor for Yen Press, partnering with Hachette Audio, whose extensive experience within the medium, essentially, ensured a high quality rendition of the novel before its release. Ki Hong Lee, with limited experience, proves to be the perfect fit to convey the personality of Jinwoo Soo with his youthful vibrancy. Furthermore, Lee is able to transition into playful or serious tones depending on the character, as well as make the various sound effects land without feeling too awkward (sometimes a problem with bangs and swooshes within narration). Overall, the audio book feels like a perfect representation of the novel – certain to please both existing and new fans.

For those who find themselves busy and unable to sit down with a physical release, audiobooks have become a nice companion in many peoples daily lives. As such, it is wonderful to see Yen Press bring their notable titles onto the format to allow greater access. Fans of “Solo Leveling” comic series will get a much deeper experience from the novel and now, with two different ways to experience it, there is little excuse not to check it out. Personally, I can't wait for more audio titles from Yen Press, a sentiment I believe will resonate with many other fans once they give it a listen.
