Trailer: Tracing Her Shadow by Peng Fei

After the end of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1945, a large number of Japanese orphans were adopted by families in Northeast China. When diplomatic relations between the two countries were normalised in the 1970s and 1980s, many orphans returned to Japan to find their roots, including Chen Lihua, the adopted daughter of Grandma Chen Huiming (). In 2005, Grandma Chen seems to have lost touch with her adopted daughter and decides to travel to Nara, Japan to search for her. With limited knowledge and facing language barriers, she embarks on a unique journey with the help of Xiao Ze (), who is half-Chinese and herself the child of a war orphan, as well as a retired police officer ().

is an original film, the third feature written and directed by . It is produced by and Jia Zhangke. Director Peng Fei's previous films are Underground Fragrance and The Taste of Rice Flower. He is a regular collaborator of Tsai Ming-liang and also the co-writer of Stray Dogs. Actor Jun Kunimura has an extensive filmography of Japanese, Hong Kong and Hollywood films including Korean film The Wailing. He can be seen in TBS drama Japan Sinks: People of Hope, which is currently airing on Netflix. Actress Wu Yanshu has garnered recognition for her films Finding Mr Right 2 and Love Education.

Theatrical release in Japan is scheduled for February 4, 2022 with a preliminary screening in Nara Prefecture on January 28, 2022.
