Short Film Review: The Key of Savior (2021) by Takeshi Suzuki

Tokyo in Blue

” is a strange superhero story. It's not very easy to tell what the plot of this short film exactly is. Searching for official information on it, you will find the following: A young woman has to save the world from a mortal virus. We see that she is upset, a bit scared. Still she walks with a certain confidence through the streets of Tokyo. It's night.

The Key of Savior is screening at Japan Filmfest Hamburg

The girl's final destination seems to be a special tall building. Once she reaches it, the two towers on it incline, are directed towards the sky and fire a powerful blue-whitish laser light into the clouds. The world is saved, the girl is happy.

It seems clear that the story is only a pretext to experiment with colors and light. There is not much to interpret here on an intellectual level. The short rather attempts to touch its viewers on an sensual way. The result is not very convincing. There a few symbols that we know from video games, science fiction or fantasy stories. The atmosphere is that of a dystopia.

Everything is bathed in blue, a cold blue. Prominent pictures of the Tokyo skyline are lined up as in a promotional tourist video. The camera is alternately steady or hand-held, it follows the protagonist in her journey through the city. The play with the colors, the dominant blue and the yellow scarf of the girl, is quite intriguing. The music however is cheesy, predictable.

More than a narrative short film, “The Key of Savior” is more like a music video.
