Spotlight to open 17th edition of CAMERA JAPAN Festival

With over 50+ films, Festival is proud to announce their full and diverse programme, combining films ranging from de newest and best Japanese arthouse, animation, documentaries, short films and classic cinema.

The 17th edition of the festival will be opened at LantarenVenster on September 22nd with the international premiere of KOUMEI's Spotlight,
with the director and leading actor MORIMOTO Nobuhiro present. From 29 Sept. – 2 October, the festival moves to Amsterdam's LAB111.

With four international and twelve European premieres, the festival consists of a special and exclusive programme. Films such as Spotlight, Nagi's Island, Prior Convictions and Thanc You, will have their first screenings outside of Japan here at CAMERA JAPAN Festival. Among the many Dutch premieres titles from directors such as MIIKE Takashi (The Great Yokai War: Guardians) and ODAGIRI Joe (They Say Nothing Stays the Same) will be shown.

As usual, animation films will be present at CAMERA JAPAN Festival. Besides a handful of animated shorts, the festival is proud to present Dutch premieres of Dozens of Norths, Goodbye Don Glees, The House of the Lost on the Cape and Summer Ghost.

The festival also shows a retrospective of four newly restored films by famous actress and revolutionary director TANAKA Kinuyo. All four films consist of a progressive, female point-of-view; a unique view in post-war Japanese cinema.

Another classic, OZU Yasujiro's silent film Where Now Are the Dreams of Youth will be shown accompanied by a live performance of the Rotterdam Kinematic Ensemble.

About the author

Rouven Linnarz

Ever since I watched Takeshi Kitano's "Hana-Bi" for the first time (and many times after that) I have been a cinephile. While much can be said about the technical aspects of film, coming from a small town in Germany, I cherish the notion of art showing its audience something which one does normally avoid, neglect or is unable to see for many different reasons. Often the stories told in films have helped me understand, discover and connect to something new which is a concept I would like to convey in the way I talk and write about films. Thus, I try to include some info on the background of each film as well as a short analysis (without spoilers, of course), an approach which should reflect the context of a work of art no matter what genre, director or cast. In the end, I hope to pass on my joy of watching film and talking about it.
