Born and raise in Montreal (1985), Marie was quickly looking for a more creative approach in her life. She studied a few years in cinematography before getting into University. Then, with not much to show and little knowledge in the design field, Marie manage with hard work to be accepted at the “École de Design” where she experienced her best years as a young artist. Once out, she dedicated most of her time to create, try stuff. Build up a portfolio. Became a freelancer.
Bergeron’s style is inspired by many, including films and games. Somehow, a more graphic approach contrasted with organic strokes. Always tries to focus the eye on one particular subject, sometimes complexed yet simple. Working with digital tools always suited her best.
How did your interest with Asian cinema begin and how did you started working on film posters and covers?
I guess my interest with the Asian cinema always been there. It’s part of the cinema culture and, personally, I think they are the best in the horror / thriller genre. Mostly Korean, love their films. They really understand the art.
Can you also give us some details about your work in animation and graphic design?
I’ve studied about 5 years in Graphic Design which really helped me understand composition and the impact of an image when it’s well executed. Within that 5 years, I discovered Illustrations. This is where it all began. My passion and love for it just grew from there.

What is your procedure, when you start creating an art work?
Thinking! Trying to imagine an image on a blank space is my first thought. Then, I move on social media and the internet in general to find inspirations based on what I want to create. After that, I doodle things around in my sketchbooks before I move to final piece on my computer.
Have you ever had to do artwork for a film you do not like? Or come up with something about a film you like but you end up not liking the work? In general, as a movie fan, what kind of movies do you like?
When you begin in that industry, you definitely have to work on things that you don’t really like or inspires you that much. It’s part of it. But with time, you get in the position to choose what you’ll be working on more and more. I try to avoid things that really doesn’t get me, or inspires me. It shows in the art if it doesn’t. So what is the point then…except getting paid. There is some illustrations yes, that I think I manage to transcript the idea of a film or a game better than the subject itself. I think it is a powerful idea to describe a concept in one image.
For movies, I enjoy pretty much everything. It just needs to be special, or well executed. I need to feel emotions. I do though, enjoy horror, thriller, psychological movies in general. Not the kind that jump scares you, but the one that really makes you think. I think the horror genre is the most efficient to give your mind a real trip. For say, “Shining” or “Hereditary”….this what I am talking about.

How did your cooperation with The Jokers and Third Window started
It came like every contracts. It starts with an email. Lucky me, with time, I got to work on great films, with great production houses.
Can you give us some details about how came up with the artwork of The Kitano Collection, Parasite, Akira, and Spirited Away?

With the latter, these are personal work. Just films that I admire and that I wanted to hit somehow. Especially Spirited which is I think one of the most beautiful animation ever created. For Kitano’s and Parasite. Again these come from production that just found my work interesting enough to collaborate with me. I had a blast working on these projects.
Can you also let us know of some your own favorite works?
Mmmmm…good question. I think, with my graphic design background, the most simplest images are the one that hits the best. It is harder to send a message with a very simple image than the opposite. I guess The Godfather is one. The poster I did for US, Under the Skin…things like that. I really enjoy working on Ghibli images as we speak.

Are you working on anything new at the moment?
I just finished creating a few images for Comic Con Montreal which is available on my store as we speak. (coming soon)
And for the rest, I can speak of it…but I am on the verge to finish a board game with a company. Really cool project.
