Jia Zhang-ke will chair the 31st Vesoul International Asian Film Festival (February 11-18, 2025)

The 31st Vesoul International Film Festival Asian Cinema, chaired by the international jury of the great Chinese director (The World Grand Jury Prize Vesoul 2005, Still Life Golden Lion Venice 2006, A Touch of Sin Screenplay Prize Cannes 2013, Caught by Tides competition Cannes 2024), presents the complete feature films of Jia Zhang-ke, in the presence of his muse, the actress

Two honorary Cyclos d’or are awarded to them during the opening ceremony at the Théâtre Edwige Feuillère.

92 films, including 47 unreleased ones, make up the official selection.

The fiction and documentary competitions offer a selection of 17 films from Bhutan, China, Korea, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines, Malaysia, Yakutia, etc., judged by 7 juries (International, Critics, Netpac, Marc Haaz, Friends of the Guimet Museum, High School and Youth) and presented by the film teams:

A Look at Hong Kong Cinema (1971 – 2024), in the presence of actress Patra Au, who has won multiple awards at international festivals for her roles in All Shall Be Well or Suk Suk includes around twenty key films, covers all genres, from martial arts films to auteur cinema, from Bruce Lee to Wong Kar-wai, including Johnnie To, John Woo, Ann Hui, Stanley Kwan, Ray Yeung, …

An exceptional retrospective on the little-known cinematography of Burma, allows you to discover 13 films, fiction or documentary, and 14 short animated films, in the presence of the directors The Maw Naing and Maung Sun.

The thematic section “Generation(s)”looks at intergenerational relations in 20 films from the Near to the Far East.

Master class by Jia Zhang-ke, round tables on Hong Kong cinema and Burmese cinema, theme evenings (Cosplay, China, Hong Kong, Burma, Valentine’s Day) literary, poetry, dance and music events surround the 220 non-stop screenings, from 9am to midnight.

The resumption of award-winning films will take place from March 27-29, 2025 at the Guimet Museum of Asian Arts in Paris

Panagiotis (Panos) Kotzathanasis is a film critic and reviewer, specialized in Asian Cinema. He is the owner and administrator of Asian Movie Pulse, one of the biggest portals dealing with Asian cinema. He is a frequent writer in Hancinema, Taste of Cinema, and his texts can be found in a number of other publications including SIRP in Estonia, Film.sk in Slovakia, Asian Dialogue in the UK, Cinefil in Japan and Filmbuff in India.

Since 2019, he cooperates with Thessaloniki Cinematheque in Greece, curating various tributes to Asian cinema. He has participated, with video recordings and text, on a number of Asian movie releases, for Spectrum, Dekanalog and Error 4444. He has taken part as an expert on the Erasmus+ program, “Asian Cinema Education”, on the Asian Cinema Education International Journalism and Film Criticism Course.

Apart from a member of FIPRESCI and the Greek Cinema Critics Association, he is also a member of NETPAC, the Hellenic Film Academy and the Online Film Critics Association.
