Two-time EMMY winning and five-time nominee beauty expert Gabbi Pascua and creative business partner Alan Dennis are on a quest for beauty. The filmmakers are trekking through Japan for their latest documentary “A Study on Beauty: Onsen” that highlights the country’s wellness and beauty cultures and rituals used in the country.
A Study On Beauty is an international docuseries which, under the umbrella of their production company ASOB Media, Gabbi Pascua and Alan Dennis have already embraced the perfume industry in France with their documentary “A Study On Beauty: Through Smoke” and are now in Japan filming their next installment of their docuseries.
“A Study on Beauty: Onsen” is set on the islands of Japan, that for thousands of years have cultivated a culture that was, for a time, long isolated from the rest of the world. The land of samurai and geisha that we know today once blossomed symbolic traditions of beauty, spirituality, and wellness as a means of discipline and healing. The transcended rituals have stood the test of time, proving relevance in ancient practices worth protecting in modern society today. Japan, uniquely defined, inspired A Study on Beauty to begin a quest to understand the spirit of a nation through the unexpected healing resource available to anyone worth seeking hot springs.
Onsen, quiet yet coveted, has threaded generations of communities together through rituals and ceremonies. The art of bathing in mineral rich waters has been a place for refreshment, meditation and solitude grounded within Japan’s soil. Influential running springs beneath the earth that emerges through time, has for centuries impacted individuals, families and communities alike.
From a global perspective, one can observe that Japan’s bold spirit has been sustained through a sense of balance and unrelenting discipline. As we explore the significance of the natural resources of Japanese hot springs and the healing properties of timeless Onsen culture, our study teaches us that a quest of understanding the nurturing spirit of Japan can be found beneath the depths of our feet.
The soil on which many stand is the same soil that absorbs seasons as they change, reminding us to connect with the present, to each other and to the very alive spirit of the healing waters that can unexpectedly spring before us.
Other documentaries in the series by ASOB Media include Kultura (working title) set on the Philippine Islands that unveils ancient beauty systems and customs. As well as a three-part series “America the Beautiful” that deep dives into America’s beauty standards shaped by global influences, America’s impact on the world’s beauty landscape and the future of the American beauty industry.
