Short Film Review: Gourmet (2019) by Haruto Suzuki

In this 3-minute short movie we follow a brief exchange between two schoolboys. They are working in an empty classroom, probably finishing their homework. It's 5:30 pm, a time after school when appetite starts to rise, and one of the two, furtively bites into something that is not really edible despite a certain visual appeal; he thinks nobody can see him but his fellow pupil behind has noticed something.

Gourmet” is screening at Japan Filmfest Hamburg

Cryptic but playful, “” leaves room for personal interpretation and elaboration. A certain appetite for new things in life, often generated by curiosity and peer emulation, can evolve into sheer pleasure and it could be the beginning of a long lasting passion. You never know!

Funny and enigmatic, “Gourmet” is possibly the shortest coming of age tale you will watch this year, and it will leave you – like the protagonist – with a big grin.

About the author

Adriana Rosati

On paper I am an Italian living in London, in reality I was born and bread in a popcorn bucket. I've loved cinema since I was a little child and I’ve always had a passion and interest for Asian (especially Japanese) pop culture, food and traditions, but on the cinema side, my big, first love is Hong Kong Cinema. Then - by a sort of osmosis - I have expanded my love and appreciation to the cinematography of other Asian countries. I like action, heroic bloodshed, wu-xia, Shaw Bros (even if it’s not my specialty), Anime, and also more auteur-ish movies. Anything that is good, really, but I am allergic to rom-com (unless it’s a HK rom-com, possibly featuring Andy Lau in his 20s)"
