In a night that is bound to go down in history for Asian Cinema, Bong Joon-ho's “Parasite” became the first-ever Korean movie to receive an award at the Golden Globe.
Moreover Nora Lum, better known by her stage name Awkwafina, was the first actress of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy, for her portrayal of Billi Wang in “The Farewell”
The 77th Golden Globe Awards took place in Los Angeles, US on January 6, and “Parasite” was announced as the winner of the Best Foreign Language Film. The film was also nominated for Best Director (Motion Picture) and Best Screenplay (Motion Picture).
Collecting his prize, director Bong Joon-ho reminded the public that “You can enjoy many more films if you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles,” then added “I think we use only one language: the cinema.”
After its release in October, “Parasite” had become the highest-grossing foreign-language film of the year, and is now poised to become one of the top 10-grossing foreign-language films of all time at the U.S. box office.
“Parasite” is currently on the shortlist of nominees for International Feature Film in the 92nd Academy Awards.
