Leading curated streaming platform MUBI announced today its April release slate of films and curated series from both emerging talent and acclaimed directors from across the globe. Next month, MUBI will unveil the next phase of their innovative Special Discovery series, with the introduction of no less than seven new exclusive strands featuring exciting new titles that can't be seen elsewhere.
MUBI's new exclusive strands, which will enjoy a permanent home on the platform with two to four titles added each month, include: Debuts – a celebration of first features from new filmmakers;
The New Auteurs – a tribute to emerging artists and filmmakers with distinct visions;
Luminaries – works from the established masters of cinema;
Brief Encounters – the very best in new short cinema;
Undiscovered – adventurous works that push boundaries and challenge the status quo;
Rediscovered – restored classics waiting to be revisited;
MUBI Releases – MUBI's all-rights acquisitions, hand-picked from festivals and released in theaters before premiering on the platform (2018 releases include Stephen Nomura Schible's “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda” and Philippe Garrel's “Lover for a Day”).
Additionally, MUBI will present all three volumes of Miguel Gomes's epic adaptation of the “Arabian Nights saga” (Cannes 2015) as part of a new spotlight on Adaptations, as well as a curated selection of highlights straight from “Art of the Real,” the Film Society of Lincoln Center's annual showcase of groundbreaking nonfiction film. And in celebration of Claire Denis' latest release “High Life”, MUBI will pay tribute to her prior work as part of the series exploring contemporary auteurs.
April also sees MUBI's presentation of the first-ever online retrospective of one of the most important partnerships in cinema – the husband-and-wife team of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet – with 10 new restorations of these rare masterpieces.
Here are the Asian highlights from the April line-up:
“Microhabitat“ — March 22— Exclusive – (Debuts)
Korean filmmaker Jeon Go-woon's debut is a tender comedy of disenchantment told in a delightfully vignetted story of a young woman with a certain weak spot for whiskey and cigarettes.
Microhabitat (Busan 2017) is a wise meditation on livelihood and the beauty of freedoms in an unforgiving city.
“Love Education” — April 19 – (Luminaries)
What better way to kick off MUBI's Luminaries program than with the work of veteran Taiwanese filmmaker Sylvia Chang, a groundbreaking director and actress who has been making films for nearly four decades. Chang wrote, directed and starred in her most recent work, “Love Education” (Busan 2017) – an elegant, nuanced melodrama about womanhood, love and family.
