Five Flavours Film Festival News

14th Edition of Five Flavours Film Festival Announced. A trip to Asia Starting 25th of November

The 14th Asian Five Flavours Film Festival will take place between 25th of November and 2nd of December. This year fans of film diversity, thrilling experiences and intimate personal reflections are invited to screens in cinemas as well as at home!

2020 in the lunar horoscope is the Year of the Metal Rat – that’s why this clever and characterful animal will appear in the festival logo. The zodiac rat has a rich imagination, is intelligent and ubiquitous. You can be sure that the program under its patronage will lead to surprising and unusual regions of Asian cinema.

This year’s Five Flavours, due to sanitary restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held in a hybrid version: both in cinemas and online. However, the organisers will make every effort to ensure that this unusual formula still allows the audience to experience the unique festival atmosphere. They will not resign from meetings, discussions and accompanying events that will provide a lively contact with contemporary Asian culture and the cinema world, as none of it lost its spirit in difficult times.

As this year many trips and travel plans had to be suspended, one of the main thematic sections of the festival will be “Journey to Asia”. The programme will include films that will allow us to wander around the most inaccessible parts of the region, meet fascinating people and unusual places. Cinema travels are a good idea for those who yearn for beautiful landscapes, those who want to return to Asian bustling cities and streets or, on the contrary, find solace in the wilderness after months spent in the home office.

One of the films presented in this section will be “Mekong 2030“, a unique project behind which there are several directors from South East Asia: Anocha Suwichakornpong (Thailand), Anysay Keola (Laos), Sai Naw Kham (Myanmar), Kulikar Sotho (Cambodia), Pham Ngoc Lan (Vietnam). Two of them are well-known to audience of Five Flavours – as part of 4th edition a showcase of Anocha Suwichakornpong’s films was presented, and Kulikar Sotho’s “The Last Reel” was in the Competition of 9th edition.

An anthology film about one of Asia’s largest rivers, with 60 million people living on its banks, is a reflection on its future and need to take care of the region’s ecosystem. It is at the same time a unique insight into the world of communities using its resources, in some cases immortalized on film for the very first time.

The Mekong Delta will of course be only one of many areas that will be visited – as every year, the Festival will take you to Japan, Korea or Hong Kong. Work on the programme is intense and the challenges posed by current situation are only an impulse for new ideas and solutions. The organisers are preparing numerous surprises, which will be gradually revealed on the website and in social media, so make sure you follow them!

14th Five Flavours Asian Film Festival will take place in Warsaw and online between 25th November – 2nd December 2020.

The Festival is supported by Warsaw City Council and Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

About the author

Adriana Rosati

On paper I am an Italian living in London, in reality I was born and bread in a popcorn bucket. I've loved cinema since I was a little child and I’ve always had a passion and interest for Asian (especially Japanese) pop culture, food and traditions, but on the cinema side, my big, first love is Hong Kong Cinema. Then - by a sort of osmosis - I have expanded my love and appreciation to the cinematography of other Asian countries. I like action, heroic bloodshed, wu-xia, Shaw Bros (even if it’s not my specialty), Anime, and also more auteur-ish movies. Anything that is good, really, but I am allergic to rom-com (unless it’s a HK rom-com, possibly featuring Andy Lau in his 20s)"
