Film Review: Sexy S.W.A.T. Team (1998) By Mototsugu Watanabe

If the Sexy S.W.A.T. Team gets another case, I would definitely want to see how it goes.

With a pervert on the loose, using a ray gun to drive woman sex crazed, it is up to an elite group within the police division, the Sexy S.W.A.T Team, to find out the man behind the attacks and bring him to justice.

Experienced police officer Michelle gets a feeling something is not quite right when taking the subway to work. As she looks upon a woman fixing her make-up, she notices the reflection of a flashing red light which causes her to writhe in ecstasy. When she comes to her senses, she finds a man passed out, his life force seemingly taken from him. She figures that the other woman who also saw the red light flashing must be the culprit and tries but is unable to catch her. Going back to headquarters, frustrated with her failure, she requests more backup on the case. They reach out to the police chief, but because of budget restraints, he can only offer up one person, Heather, whose previous job in the academy was as a cleaning lady. Michelle takes Heather under her wing and together they begin to look for clues as to whom the culprit might be.

Their search is not without setbacks as they find themselves on the receiving end of the mysterious ray gun a few times. But with the help of a civilian, the first victim, they are able to learn who is behind the attacks. As they close in on their target, they soon learn he has more tricks up his sleeve making for a difficult case for the Sexy S.W.A.T. team.

and Yumika Hayashi pair up nicely as Michelle and Heather. Tucked in between the erotic scenes and science fiction is a buddy cop film, which to succeed needed both characters to be entertaining. They play off of each other well, with Michelle's overconfidence and sense of superiority and Heather's naivety and uncertainty cause a lot of clashes which are always played for laughs. The women behind the scenes, Susan her chief officer played by and tech expert Kathy, played by Yukiko Izumi, help inject a lot of humour into the film as well. When the entire team is together things really get amusing, in spite of them playing pretty heavily into the desired female stereotypes.

The cinematography is adequate for the type of film; it is obvious that they had to work within a budget so the overall quality is not the greatest, but this should not be an issue for the viewer since the main focus is more on the comedy. The sex scenes in the film are kept pretty short with the exception of one near the beginning. This helped to keep the film light and the restrained exhibited makes space for the story, although given its premises they definitely could have indulged more in the erotic.

“Sexy S.W.A.T. Team” is a great balance of comedy, erotica and science fiction. All aspects of the film are a bit on the light side though, and as a result, it does not really do any one thing exceptionally. However, it is still a fun mash up of genres and I found the whole experience enjoyable. If the Sexy S.W.A.T. Team gets another case, I would definitely want to see how it goes.
