The last time Ryu Seung-ryong was on the big screen back in 2019, he defied all expectations and records with the box-office juggernaut that was “Extreme Job”, which has been reported as the highest-grossing domestic film in Korea (as of January 2022). His next release, “Life is Beautiful”, is an oddity in itself – a Korean musical. Though there are a few projects in the genre currently in production, a musical is not something you often see from the Korean film industry, which makes “Default” director Choi Kook-hee's film one to look forward to.
Synopsis
A musical about a woman named Oh Se-yeon (Yum Jung-ah) who asks her husband to help her find her childhood sweetheart as a last birthday gift. Her husband Kang Jin-bong (Ryu Seung-ryong) has no choice but to reluctantly set out on this journey with her.
The script is written by Bae Se-young, who has also penned the scripts for “Extreme Job”, “Intimate Strangers” and “What a Man Wants“, some of the best comedy films to come out of Korea in recent years. It is also quite a turn for director Choi Kook-hee, whose last release was the 2018 financial drama “Default”. Also featuring Ong Seong-wu, Yuk Sim-hwan and Lee Won-hee, “Life is Beautiful” was scheduled for a December 2020 release in South Korea but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A release date is expected to be announced shortly.
