Book Review: Bofuri: I Don’t Want To Get Hurt So I’ll Max Out My Defense (Book 1, 2021) by Yuumikan

"Bofuri" is an ideal balance of humor, action and homage to RPG's, told through an adorable and bubbly hero

“IS SHE THE GAME'S LAST BOSS?! Though she doesn't play many MMOs, Maple has either a natural talent or impossibly good luck, because by pouring every last stat point she has into Vitality, she's created a character who can't be hurt! Whether it's physical attacks or magic or status effects, nothing poses a real threat. In no time at all, news spreads across the server about the adorable terror who can't be defeated. While Maple may just be having fun, her broken build is sure to attract lots of unexpected attention…” (Yen Press)

Embracing a love of RPG's and a desire to explore different paths of exploration within the genre, “” poses an intriguing scenario of extreme min/maxing stats through a delightfully captivating protagonist. With the title already being adapted to both anime and manga, the debut book in the light novel series gives fans good reason to revisit and celebrate the lovable shield wielding hero.

's work flows effortlessly, utilizing using stat screens and script from group chats to give an overarching view of the game and the way users interact within it. In addition, the author punctuates the charming nature of protagonist Maple by imbuing her with a determined aloofness that makes her the perfect subject for exploring the VR world. Essentially, Maple's innocent nature draws in the audience through celebrating her determination and optimism as opposed to making a mockery of her obvious limited understanding of the gaming world; she is certainly an adorable ‘newb'. Ultimately, Maples acts as the perfect guide to the expansive VR world know as ‘NewWorld Online' as she explores the world in a unique way while giving the readers an idea of how the game should actually be optimized.

Adding RPG fan appeal, Maple represents a path less traveled, that gamers will likely be aware of or have attempted themselves. The ‘build' of Maple is peculiar and her way of defeating monsters by just taking damage and, in one case, eating an entire dragon speaks to those who approach games with an unorthodox fashion. Looking outside of the ‘meta' to try to build something that works despite its limitation, has been a playstyle which inspires certain gamers. Ultimately, the book carves out a niche within a genre that is as refreshing as it is familiar.

Within the format of communicating through game stats and chatrooms, the book does suffer one shortcoming that is hard to deny. At 179 pages, it is a really short read and can be completed within a few sittings, possibly one. However, this bit sized release may also appeal to some readers and their habits, a determinant to some will be a positive to others. Regardless, the release is undeniably short lived compared to the majority of light novel releases.

In realizing the series's potential (Yen Press will also publish the manga), the publisher has put extra effort into giving fans a deeper dive into “Bofuri”. For readers interested in the series or already enjoying it and want to know more, Yen Press provided a Q&A and videos that are both insightful and entertaining – you can check it out over at their site.

“Bofuri” is an ideal balance of humor, action and homage to RPGs, told through an adorable and bubbly hero. Ultimately, fans of light novels centered around fantasy and videogames will fall in love with the series, if they have not already through the anime.
