Film Review: Sexy Sisters of Sorrow (2008) by Akira Fukuhara

A sensual and sentimental rollercoaster of love, lust, and envy.

As a story and screenplay writer of Japanese pink films, focuses on human connections found and lost, blending romantic drama with subtle yet steamy moments of softcore pornography. This remains the case with “Sexy Sisters of Sorrow,” a story of largely scandalous and sexy proportions about a secret love triangle between a man and two sisters. This title from Japanese erotic cinema studio PinkEiga.tv is the second of two movies that Fukuhara directed in the late 2000's.

With the opening of the movie, viewers are offered a glimpse into the bedroom of unsatisfied wife Eiko, who finds solace in the arms of a handsome younger man named Mitsuo. After a spell of passion and lust between the two lovers, Eiko pushes herself away from Mitsuo and tells him she can no longer continue their secret affair due to the emotional strain that it has put on her.

Life goes on, and the scandal is left hidden for two full years. All of a sudden, Eiko's younger sister Yukio calls out of the blue to happily announce her engagement: the husband-to-be is none other than Mitsuo. Previous lovers Eiko and Mitsuo lie in the company of Yukio as though they have never met before, but grapple with maintaining the secret of their past while the unquenchable thirst in their hearts and their bodies is consistently calling upon them.

Working alongside director Akira Fukuhara is longtime cinematographer of Japanese pink film , whose drawn out shots and elaborately put-together set designs of home and bedroom settings allow for a heightened sense of dramatic urgency. The lead acting performances shine through in “Sexy Sisters of Sorrow,” with Naoyuki Chiba and Kyoko Hayami mastering the roles of past lovers trying their best not to succumb to carnal temptation—Meanwhile, Komari Awashima makes a genuinely convincing Yukio, the excitable younger sister of Eiko who is clueless to the haunting truth regarding the people she loves.

“Sexy Sisters of Sorrow” is a sensual and sentimental rollercoaster of love, lust, and envy. It might not bring anything innovative to the erotic world of Japanese pink film, but it plays on the genre's soapy elements in a fun way, and masters the classic tale of a love triangle.
