Vienna Shorts: Programme, passes, and tentative format announced

Great cinema in short form is on again this year!

Vienna Shorts 2021 plans are ready — for the most part. The shorts film festival announced today that they are still waiting upon local governance to respond as to whether the 18th edition of Vienna Shorts will be exclusively online or partially in-cinema. Either way, the festival is currently programming for safe screenings both in-cinemas and outdoors. The festival will start on May 27.

Festival passes are now available to purchase as well. Passes cost 15 euros each. They provide access to more than 300 films and the opportunity to comment and vote. The pass also allows access to a short film program exclusively curated by several European festivals called THIS IS SHORT. THIS IS SHORT also contains content from Austrian distributor Lemonade films. Starting today, a week of the Vienna Shorts program classic, “Utopias Are For Realists!”

If one wants a sneak peek of this year’s schedule, the Vienna Shorts film programme is largely finalized. From nearly 5,000 submissions from around the world, 90 films from 34 countries were selected for their four competition categories. Exactly half of the works came from female filmmakers. Click through their website to get an overview of which international films are running in Fiction & Documentary and Animation Avantgarde and which films are nominated for the Austrian Competition and the Austrian Music Video Award. A total of 20,000 euros in prize money and qualifications for, among others, the Oscars and the European Film Award are at stake.

Further updates, brand new festival passes, and information on their competition films can be found on viennashorts.com and on their social media channels @viennashorts.
