Kaisei Sakamoto (Kanta SATO) is in high school and lives in a town with a view of Gunkanjima (Hashima Island or Battleship Island) in Nagasaki. His father, Genkai (Masaya KATO), runs a small ramen shop. Kaisei, who has lost his beloved mother, is always prone to fighting others while Genkai, whose late wife was his childhood sweetheart, drowns his sorrows in alcohol. Struggling with their loss, both father and son are also at odds with each other. One day, Kaisei learns his parents were born on Gunkanjima. Meanwhile, Genkai notices a letter on the altar where his wife is enshrined.
Gunkan Shonen (also known as Warship Boy) is the live-action adaptation of Daiju YANAUCHI's (Gang King, Seven☆Star) coming-of-age manga, serialised in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2012 and compiled in two tankōbon volumes. It is directed by Yuki SAITO, known for TV Asahi's popular BL drama Ossan's Love.
