Beibei Hu: Design the Unexitable World for the Story of “The Lucky One”.

In this world, how many wishes do we humans make every day? Among these wishes, how many will be fulfilled? “” is the type of story that talks about the people's desire. If the realization of human wishes depends on the whim of a few bored goddesses, doesn't this suggest that the way we go about our lives is absurd? In “The Lucky One” a simple man makes a wish, to become a god. He becomes a god. If he knew the wishes of goodness are just forced office workers, would he still envy their life? No one will really know what they should pay for to achieve their goal, and have no idea what they really get after they fulfill their wishes.

The story of “The Lucky One”: Four goddesses play Mahjong in heaven through eternity while they grant random human wishes. Beside them is a chunky, cute boy who reads humans' wishes on a massive pile of cards that are constantly increasing. The four goddesses accidentally select a wish from a man who is tired of his human life and wants to be a god. The man switches with one of the goddesses. He is excited at first but gradually realizes God's life is not what he imagined.

Filmmakers Yichi and Beibei have communicated many times about how to create this unexitable world for goddesses to stay in. The production designer, Beibei wanted to break the recognition of reality as most people know. Normally, the common people will think the place the goddessed lives in should be a very ideal utopia world. But everything has two different sides. We only pay attention to the glamor of the goddess's power, but do not notice what they need to contribute to. Do they live in unusual environments? Starting from this point, Beibei wants to make this world in a very limited space, the overall place is like a giant dice. Even though the goddesses are living inside and throw the dice randomly to make common people's wish come true, it seems they never know they are actually trapped in this giant dice without freedom. They are just like the workers who finish their duty everyday. There are also some challenges for Beibei to design, the four goddesses represent fortune, love, death, and maturity in the world. How can the audience distinguish those four immediately? That is the question that should be answered through the visual language. Extracting the features of four goodesses, Beibei used 4 different colors, and combining the various items to represent them, gold means fortune, black means death, red means love, blue means maturity.

On the surface, “The Lucky One” describes the story of a common person who wants to be a goddess. But for the inside meaning, pursuing your goal is like climbing a mountain, you want to go to the top of the mountain, you assume that is the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen before. What if eventually, after you cross the mountains, you find the scenery is not what you have imagined? We wish because we long to get to a better place. Are those places really better than where we are now, or are they just in our imagination before we reach the other shore? Maybe life is meant to be absurd, and maybe a lot of times it takes a miracle to fulfill a wish. However, there is one miracle that happens in our life all the time: Love. For Beibei, designing the concept for this story is very interesting. This is not the usual set dress in the normal house, you should be creative to think bold, sometimes you need to think like a director, how the environment could explain the storyline, what the elements can move the story forward. You can give the suggestion about the story plot in terms of the art. Making a film is not an easy thing to do, it is all about collaboration.
