5. Josee, The Tiger and The Fish by Seiko Tanabe & Nao Emoto
Hitting the same emotional stings as the anime, “Josee” flows perfectly between drama and romance, while leaving a bit of room for moments of calmness to capture the beauty of the sea and the visceral reactions of its characters. In fact, the book has a slightly cinematic flow to it given a naturalistic flow that makes room for textless panels that establish the environment and atmosphere.
4. Sensei's Pious Lie by Akane Torikai
Given the graphic nature of “Sensei's Pious Lie”, and the realization that there may not be a silver lining for the characters, the work is obviously only going to appeal to certain readers. But for those infatuated with the works of Inio Asano (I know there are a lot of you out there), Akane Torikai is equally deserving of the same obsessive fandom when Torikai's voice becomes prominent and distinct in approaching issues of abuse from a woman's perspective.
3. Kowloon Generic Romance by Jun Mayuzuki
“Kowloon Generic Romance” is the best debut I have had the pleasure to read this year, it is the series I am most ecstatic to carry on with into 2023. While it is still early to say with certainty the manga will be able to maintain the same standards in subsequent volumes it is difficult to picture a scenario where Jun Mayuzuki upsets the phenomenal worldbuilding and storytelling in the inaugural volume. A must-read.
2. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou by Hitoshi Ashinano
“Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou” is a title that seemed long overdue for translation, and while readers will finally get a chance to experience the work it won't necessarily appeal to a broad audience–those into action-heavy stories and modern aesthetics may find the work dull. However, for those who consume manga en masse, this book will represent itself as an idealistic slice of life which is the equivalent of a warm hug.
1. Witches by Daisuke Igarashi
Several tales of witchcraft throughout the ages come together beautifully under the artistic direction of Daisuke Igarashi. There is a specific chaotic power to each story contained within, that will leave readers with a different understanding of the powerful forces of nature and female divinity. The book also plays with elements of both horror and romance to make a well-rounded experience, this is even before acknowledging the superior visuals and storytelling abilities of Igarashi. Better yet, the entire series was collected in one omnibus edition.
