Interview With Kaity Nguyen: I Think I Ran Over That Bridge More Than 30 Times

Kaity Nguyen The Last Wife
About the role of Linh and what she searches in the role she plays, her cooperation with co-star Thuận Nguyễn and director Victor Vu, her favorite scene in the movie, working in the Vietnamese movie industry and other topics

was born in Ho Chi Minh City but grew up in the US. Eventually, she returned to Vietnam in order to pursue her acting career, starring in some of the highest grossing movies of all times, including “” and “”.

On the occasion of her latest film, “” having been released in the US and Canada by 3388 Films, we speak with her about the role of Linh and what she searches in the role she plays, her cooperation with co-star Thuận Nguyễn and director , her favorite scene in the movie, working in the Vietnamese movie industry and other topics

What drew you to the role of Linh? In general, what are you searching for in the roles you play?

When I read the script, what really interested me about this project was where and when it took place and the female image back in the 19th century. Growing up in Minnesota as a Vietnamese American, I didn't know a lot about the Vietnamese culture, so to get this opportunity to learn and see our traditions for me is the best part of this journey. I'm always searching for projects that can show the true beauty of Vietnamese people and share that with the world. I want to know my roots and understand where I come from. With Linh's character, she proves that the unconditional love of a mother is very strong and powerful. Linh would do anything to protect Dong Nhi's future, which is something that all mothers would do for their children. It made me think and understand so much more about my mom and my grandma and what they did for our family.

How would you describe Linh? Do you like her? Do you think you could be friends with her if you met her?

I think Linh is very special, she has a very beautiful heart, and she always thinks of a better future she could have for her and Dong Nhi. She always believed in love, and even if love brings so many challenges to her life, she never gave up. I love Linh with all my heart and if I was her friend, I would want to protect her from the sadness in her life, and make her happy.

Kaity Nguyen Thuận Nguyễn in Third Wife

How was your cooperation with Thuận Nguyễn and how with Victor Vu? Would you work with them again if you had the chance?

I'm very lucky to be able to work with such a great crew. Everyone takes care of each other like a family. Especially if you're filming far away from home, it's always nice to have someone there for you. Victor is a great director, he's always calm and clear about what he needs from us, which is rare for directors in Vietnam. Thuan is my partner in crime haha, we need each other to complete the Linh and Nhân story. He understands where I am with my emotions, and never makes me feel like I'm alone in this.

Which is your favorite scene in the movie, and which is the most difficult to shoot?

Check the review of the film

My favorite scene in the movie is when me and Dong Nhi are holding hands, singing and going back home to see my parents. I think some of Linh's happiest moments in life are because of Dong Nhi (the light of her life). The hardest scene, may be the one where I was running over the bridge; looks easy but was very difficult to shoot. All the different departments had to work together for that one perfect shot. I think I ran over that bridge more than 30 times and got some blisters on my foot, and almost fell into the river.

What is your opinion of the Vietnamese industry at the moment? Are there many opportunities for actresses nowadays?

The industry is growing fast, with so many young film makers starting their careers. There are so many opportunities for young actors to shine, but it also means we as actors should work on our craft more to grow with the industry. My company, KAT HOUSE, will work on being a production house soon in the near future and, hopefully, we can bring some fresh air into the industry.

Are you working on any new project?

Right now, I'm taking some time to enjoy myself with my family, and as an actor “we're always working on something“ :))), but yes, I will be back on the big screen soon and can't wait to share it with you guys.

My name is Panos Kotzathanasis and I am Greek. Being a fan of Asian cinema and especially of Chinese kung fu and Japanese samurai movies since I was a little kid, I cultivated that love during my adolescence, to extend to the whole of SE Asia.

Starting from my own blog in Greek, I then moved on to write for some of the major publications in Greece, and in a number of websites dealing with (Asian) cinema, such as Taste of Cinema, Hancinema, EasternKicks, Chinese Policy Institute, and of course, Asian Movie Pulse. in which I still continue to contribute.

In the beginning of 2017, I launched my own website, Asian Film Vault, which I merged in 2018 with Asian Movie Pulse, creating the most complete website about the Asian movie industry, as it deals with almost every country from East and South Asia, and definitely all genres.
