Thursday, March 11, 8 PM EST—Followed by a Live Artist Q&A

“A poignant reflection of what American families are going through today”” —Aya Ogawa

Set a few years after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, Ludic Proxy: Fukushima invites audience members, through real-time polling, to choose how the main character Maho progresses through the story. Described by The New York Times as “a sort of choose-your-own-adventure story of two sisters near postmeltdown Fukushima in Japan,” Maho functions as the audience’s avatar as she cautiously navigates daily life in their hometown, which takes on an added sense of urgency when her sister Maki reveals that she is pregnant.

In a recent interview, writer/director Aya Ogawa explains how the collision of personal life-changing events and global disasters set the foundation for Ludic Proxy. Featuring original cast members Saori Tsukada as Maho and Yuki Kawahisa as Maki, this interactive play explores the human instinct to survive in the face of disaster. A live Q&A with Aya Ogawa will take place following the performance on March 11. Performed in Japanese with English subtitles

About the author

Rhythm Zaveri

Hello, my name is Rhythm Zaveri. For as long as I can remember, I've been watching movies, but my introduction to Asian cinema was old rental VHS copies of Bruce Lee films and some Shaw Bros. martial arts extravaganzas. But my interest in the cinema of the region really deepened when I was at university and got access to a massive range of VHS and DVDs of classic Japanese and Chinese titles in the library, and there has been no turning back since.

An avid collector of physical media, I would say Korean cinema really is my first choice, but I'll watch anything that is south-east Asian. I started contributing to Asian Movie Pulse in 2018 to share my love for Asian cinema in the form of my writings.
