Asian Movie Pulse Video Interviews #14: Alia Bhatt talks to Meenakshi Shedde on Gangubai Kathiawadi

On the occasion of “” having its world premiere at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival's Berlinale Special GalaAlia Bhatt talks about how the Berlin Film Festival is lucky for her, with her third film there after Highway and Gully Boy; how she hopes this female-centric film Gangubai Kathiawadi can also do the numbers (box office); that the role appealed because it was about a woman rising from the ashes, fighting for people, heroic; on women film writers; that it is attractive for her that a man is directing, writing and thinking for the woman; about sexism in Bollywood; on playing sexually abused women in Highway, Udta Punjab and Gangubai Kathiawadi; on creating Gangubai from her imagination, and how Sanjay Leela Bhansali plants things in her head and “a plant is growing out of that.”

About the author

Adriana Rosati

On paper I am an Italian living in London, in reality I was born and bread in a popcorn bucket. I've loved cinema since I was a little child and I’ve always had a passion and interest for Asian (especially Japanese) pop culture, food and traditions, but on the cinema side, my big, first love is Hong Kong Cinema. Then - by a sort of osmosis - I have expanded my love and appreciation to the cinematography of other Asian countries. I like action, heroic bloodshed, wu-xia, Shaw Bros (even if it’s not my specialty), Anime, and also more auteur-ish movies. Anything that is good, really, but I am allergic to rom-com (unless it’s a HK rom-com, possibly featuring Andy Lau in his 20s)"
