Kaoru FUKASAWA (Takumi SAITOH) is a successful manga artist. His acclaimed manga series was published for 8 years, but has now finished. He doesn’t have any ideas for his next work. His situation seems bleak, with his editor seeming to not care about him anymore and he has a troubled relationship with his wife, Nozomi MACHIDA (Megumi). As he spends his days in despair and darkness, he visits a brothel and meets prostitute Chifuyu (Shuri). He becomes attracted to Chifuyu and they decide to head to her hometown together. Naoto TAKENAKA (one of the co-directors with Takumi SAITOH of Zokki) directs this live-action adaptation of Inio ASANO‘s manga. Asano published his manga in March 2017 in Big Comic Superior and the serialisation ended its run after 4 months. A single tankōbon volume was released in November 2017.
Downfall is scheduled to open in Japan on March 17, 2023.
