After almost twenty years since his comedy feature Protégé de la Rose Noire (2004), kung-fu legend Donnie Yen is back in the director's chair for Śakra. This time not only is he directing the wuxia epic, he's also lead actor and co-producer with his longtime collaborator, Wong Jing (Chasing the Dragon).

This big-budget action blockbuster is adapted from the classic novel, , by master wuxia novelist . As with all his other famous wuxia novels, there have been several film and drama adaptations of Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils in every decade starting in 1977 by the Shaw Brothers, TVB, CTV (Taiwan) as well as mainland China productions.

Śakra also stars Hong Kong veteran actress (At the End of Daybreak), (Limbo), (Man Hunter), Wu Yue, and Cheung Siu Fai, with special guest appearances by Liu Leung Wai and Tsui Siu Ming.

Cinema releases in Malaysia and Singapore are scheduled in 2023 for January 16, Hong Kong on January 19, Taiwan on January 20 and Korea on January 25. Interestingly, it will premiere in China via web-streaming.
