Trailer: Godzilla Minus One by Takashi Yamazaki

Anticipation has erupted with the release of the short yet captivating teaser for the upcoming film “ Minus One,” written and directed by . The latest return of the King of the Monsters is the 33rd Japanese entry in the “Godzilla” series and the 37th feature total. In addition, the film commemorates the 69th anniversary of the franchise. Similar to the previous live-action feature, “,” the movie is set to be a standalone feature.

From what has been revealed of the plot, the film is set in postwar Japan as it is in a state of despair, desperately trying to recover from the devastation from the closing months of World War II. Yet, things are about to get far worse for the country when it is threatened with further destruction by the appearance of a giant radioactive monster, setting the chances for recovery, as the trailer puts it, from “zero” to “minus.” The terrifying creature comes to be known as Godzilla. As of now, the movie's cast has yet to be announced. More updates are to come.

Takashi Yamazaki and team set out to capture the themes and tone of the original “Godzilla” directed by Ishiro Honda but with the director's unique touch while emphasizing the horrifying terror of the monster with modern special effects. Audiences may know Yamazaki for his other works, such as “Always: Sunset on Third Street” and “The Eternal Zero.” Generally, he is noted for his emphasis on spectacle and style, specifically visuals, which is understandable considering he is also a visual effects director. Yet, another staple of his movies is the portrayal of human dynamics and character emotions, which shows promise for what is to be done dramatically with the film's premise.
