Awards of the 30th VIFFAC – Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas Announced

HONORARY GOLDEN CYCLO (offered by the Agglomeration Community and the city of Vesoul): to Zero Chou director (Taiwan) et à Tu Du-chih, sound engineer (Taiwan).

CYCLO D’OR (offered by the Regional Council of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté), International Jury: President: Mohsen Makhmalbaf, director (Iran), members: Zero Chou, director (Taiwan)Fatemeh Motamed-Arya, actress (Iran), Shogen, actor (Japon).

THE SNOW LEOPARD de Pema Tseden (Chine-Tibet) –Through the mysterious relationship between the monk and the snow leopard, the traditional worldview of the Tibetan people is revealed –  a realm of spiritual emotion that is challenging to express. The director skillfully captures this enchanting world with great precision, making it a remarkable and profoundly moving achievement.

Film interprets the conflicts of the human world through a spiritual lens, this work is a truly rare gem!

GRAND JURY AWARD:

SCREAM by Kenzhebek Shaikakov (Kazakhstan). The film has magical realism style that truly commendable, and captivates. The director’s approach to condemning nuclear tests easily resonates with the audience.

JURY PRIZE (offered by the Departmental Council of Haute-Saône): 

Solids by The Seashore by Patiparn Boontarig (Thailand). A poetic and visual film to discover the inner world of two women who are discovering themselves and the outer world. A discovery in which the audience participates with the filmmaker.

Special Mention:  Orynbek Shaimaganbetov andArnur Akram, actors of Scream by Kenzhebek Shaikakov (Kazakhstan)

NETPAC AWARD (NETWORK FOR THE PROMOTION OF ASIAN CINEMA), president: Wang Yao, university (China), members: André Raphaël Ivanov, Festival director (Kazakhstan), Laha Mebow, director (Taiwan):

SCREAM by Kenzhebek Shaikakov(Kazakhstan). It reveals an unknown tragedy in history and its effects on people and their destinies, with a masterful blend of humor and poetry, in an unusual and moving father-son relationship story.

MARC HAAZ AWARD: ex-aequo, President: Seo Seung-hee, programmer BIFF (South Korea), members: Indhu VS, director (India) et The Maw Naing, director (Myanmar)

            SCREAM by Kenzhebek Shaikakov(Kazakhstan) for its distinctive emotional experience of a father-            son relationship, strengthened by the actors’ impressive performances

             THE SPARK by Rajesh Jala (IndeScream is a ‘small but great film’. Small in its minimalist aesthetic, 

             big in the power of its subject. Through the Kazakh countryside and the portrait of a family, Scream 

             offers a moving vision of the problems of our time.

FILM CRITICS’ AWARD, president: Gulnara Abikeyeva, critic (Kazakhstan) ; members : Garance Hayat (Fréquence protestante), Isabelle Malivoir (TV5 monde) :

SUNDAY de Shokir Kholikov (Uzbekistan) – The critics’ jury chose to reward a film whose graphic composition and art of detail particularly moved them. The three members of the jury were overwhelmed by the director’s ability to poetically depict the daily life of an austere rural couple confronted by the modernization of society.

Mention spéciale : THE SPARK de Rajesh Jala.  The critics’ jury awards a special mention to a film whose photography and philosophy have dazzled it. Each shot is as polished as a painting by a great master. The director brilliantly tackles a subject rooted in Indian society.

INALCO JURY PRIZE (offered by the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations), president: Anne Viguier, members : Ulysse Fornier, Enzo Labetoulle, Sonia Leconte

            THE SNOW LEOPARD de Pema Tseden (China-Tibet) – Pour son regard sur la beauté des montagnes tibétaines et l’importance symbolique des êtres qui l’habitent, pour son approche des relations diplomatiques entre humains et non-humains, pour sa présentation des difficultés juridiques à traiter les questions environnementales. 

INALCO FAVORITE:

            SOLIDS BY THE SEASHORE by Patiparn Boontarig (Thailand) mirrors the barriers men build to control the environment and those they establish in the social world. Image, sound and narration          serve this parallel, combining content and form in harmonious harmony.

The awarded film will be screened at Musée Guimet in Paris (8-10 March 2024) and at INALCO Auditorium in 2024.

The 31th edition of the Vesoul IFF Asian Cinemas will take place from February 11 to 18 February, 2025.
