MAI, the #1 box office hit of all time in Vietnam, makes a historic grand entrance into North America

MAI

, the latest drama romance film from the most commercially successful film director in Vietnam box office history, Tran Thanh, waltzes onto the international stage in grand style and is on track to capture the highest North America and international box office opening ever for a Vietnam film.

“MAI” stars the beloved Vietnamese actress Phuong Anh Dao and actor , along with Vietnamese-American Hollywood actress , known for her role in Ali Wong's multiple Emmy-award winning series BEEF.

The film opened this March 22nd weekend, via distributor 3388 Films, in an unprecedented same-day theatrical release in nearly 200 theaters in 9 countries in North America and Europe – marking the widest same-day theatrical release ever for a Vietnam film across these two continents. The film is now playing in the U.S., Canada, UK (England and Scotland), France, Germany, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.

MAI notched a record-breaking half a million in advance international sales before its opening weekend, with strong showings in nearly all the top 20 national DMAs, including Los-Angeles/Orange County, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco/San Jose, and Seattle.

When MAI secured the crown as the #1 box office hit of all time in Vietnam with 520 billion VND ($21M) in ticket sales at its local box office earlier this month, director Tran Thanhachieved a tremendous feat in a remarkable demonstration of his electrifying commercial appeal and striking ability to be on the pulse with the audience. Tran Thanh co-directed the 2021 film Bố Già (Dad, I'm Sorry), the first Vietnam-produced film to cross $1M at the U.S. box office, and made his solo directorial debut in 2023 with Nhà Bà Nữ (The House of No Man). The former amassed 427 billion VND ($17M) and the latter 475 billion VND ($19M) at its domestic box office. MAI is his third film, and his third consecutive smashing box office success.

Thien A. Pham, founder of 3388 Films, shares, “MAI broke so many records in Vietnam when it was released during the Tet holiday, so when 3388 Films took it on, we knew we had to have a phenomenal international release for a truly phenomenol film. 3388 Films is proud to have strong partners in Tran Thanh Town and CJ HK Entertainment, the producers of MAI, and we are motivated to continue to be disruptors in the way in which Vietnamese films are released globally.”

Panos Kotzathanasis

My name is Panos Kotzathanasis and I am Greek. Being a fan of Asian cinema and especially of Chinese kung fu and Japanese samurai movies since I was a little kid, I cultivated that love during my adolescence, to extend to the whole of SE Asia.

Starting from my own blog in Greek, I then moved on to write for some of the major publications in Greece, and in a number of websites dealing with (Asian) cinema, such as Taste of Cinema, Hancinema, EasternKicks, Chinese Policy Institute, and of course, Asian Movie Pulse. in which I still continue to contribute.

In the beginning of 2017, I launched my own website, Asian Film Vault, which I merged in 2018 with Asian Movie Pulse, creating the most complete website about the Asian movie industry, as it deals with almost every country from East and South Asia, and definitely all genres.
