Synopsis

At the end of the 19th Century in Shanghai, during the late 19th century, curiosity gets the better of a 13-year-old boy and he sneaks into the Manufacturing Bureau. The Mechanic's daughter A Lan, upon seeing his talents, takes him to her father. Chen Tie Han, the Mechanic, immersed in the sorrow of his son's death, refuses to give the young boy an apprenticeship. But the boy does not give up on his dream, and begins his efforts to prove himself. 2 years later, the apprentice discovers the “Green Canon” blueprint from a mysterious man, which gives him the chance to build the new weapon for a Chinese war ship. Under the pressure of attacks and technological malfunctions, the mechanics work together to successfully build the weapons which will defend their country and their people. 60 years later, in the same factory, domestic submarines and warships have defended the country for decades. The patriotism of the mechanic has been passed down through generations.

The vibrant, colourful scenes of the 19th Century Shanghai cityscape are a treat for the eyes in this immersive film for all the family to enjoy. The film transports you through time and space to the JiangNan Shipyard, the most iconic military enterprise in Chinese history where important scientific discoveries were made, against the backdrop of the Sino-Japanese War (1894). Filled with Chinese culture and history it also imparts important life lessons, such as the importance of friendship, loyalty, respect for your elders and hard work that viewers of all ages and backgrounds can appreciate.

Director's Comments:

The history background was Shanghai in the end of 19th Century. Characters are based on workers in Kiangnan Manufacturing Bureau, which is still a world leading shipyard. The old time dock is still located by Huangpu River as a historical site.

Kiangnan's background is National heavy industry development, which is not focused very much. China is known as the world factory and the heavy industry is the foundation. In this macro context, we tell the story of apprentice A Lang's growth, his deep affection with his master, his love, and his patriotism. In these respects, we are original.

Distributor Comments:

Maggie Liang, Managing Director at The Media Pioneers: “TMP is delighted to be releasing Kiangnan 1894 to VUE cinemas from 23rd October. Potentially, the film will release in Ireland later of this year. The shows the steam industrial architecture and the Shanghai style cityscape in the 19 century in a very arty way. The heart-warming story and the Entrepreneurship sprite to encourage the teenagers find out how to pursue the dream with hard working and keep going. We believe the film has an international appeal with its beautiful cinematography, universal themes and compelling storyline. We are excited to bring it to British young audience and anime fans a big surprise from China.”

Rhythm Zaveri

Hello, my name is Rhythm Zaveri. For as long as I can remember, I've been watching movies, but my introduction to Asian cinema was old rental VHS copies of Bruce Lee films and some Shaw Bros. martial arts extravaganzas. But my interest in the cinema of the region really deepened when I was at university and got access to a massive range of VHS and DVDs of classic Japanese and Chinese titles in the library, and there has been no turning back since.

An avid collector of physical media, I would say Korean cinema really is my first choice, but I'll watch anything that is south-east Asian. I started contributing to Asian Movie Pulse in 2018 to share my love for Asian cinema in the form of my writings.
