Short Film Review: Will I See You Again (2020) by Khessen

Talking with a stranger about our problems can be soothing and reassuring. But what if …?

Romantic short movie “” by Malaysian director imagines a scenario of possibilities beyond the critical moment of a modern-day young couple and the intervention of destiny in our lives.

“Will I See You Again” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative

Megha () is a young independent girl with a good job, and because of the pressure of her good job, her relationship recently fell apart. She is finding solace in a sort of Internet café, where, sheltered in little boots, people can pick up a phone and talk with a random listener. A slight connection is forming between Megha and Kathir (), the guy who twice answered her calls, but at the third call Magha's ex-boyfriend (Thina) picks up the phone.

This 12-min work is brought together by a young and enthusiastic cast and crew and it is rather well executed. The technicalities are all extremely curated and cared for; neat cinematography and editing by Rovithren Kumarakuru, with a pleasant terracotta palette and turquoise accents, good acting and timing on Kamal Ashinni Ramakrishnan's screenplay, clean and crisp sound design (Niraindera Shanmugam and TR Soul Entertainment Sound Lab), even few cinematic drone shots by Gautham Suthakar.

The storytelling is a bit slowed down at the beginning as it is not immediate what kind of place is the Café where Magha hungs out. Unless you know such places exist (I honestly didn't) it takes a moment to understand what is going on, and in 12 minutes even one moment counts!

Another note is that the score is indeed eagerly curated but sometimes the old adagio “less is more” must not be forgotten. There is here a wide variety of tunes and some of them are a bit too “corporate presentation” or “TV commercial”,

All in all, “Will I See You Again” leaves you wanting more; the story is in fact a little snippet that could easily be developed, a brilliant starting point, and we wish good luck to all the team for their work and their future in the film industry.

On paper I am an Italian living in London, in reality I was born and bread in a popcorn bucket. I've loved cinema since I was a little child and I’ve always had a passion and interest for Asian (especially Japanese) pop culture, food and traditions, but on the cinema side, my big, first love is Hong Kong Cinema. Then - by a sort of osmosis - I have expanded my love and appreciation to the cinematography of other Asian countries. I like action, heroic bloodshed, wu-xia, Shaw Bros (even if it’s not my specialty), Anime, and also more auteur-ish movies. Anything that is good, really, but I am allergic to rom-com (unless it’s a HK rom-com, possibly featuring Andy Lau in his 20s)"
