Synopsis: Adapted from British writer Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot series of novels, “Checkmate” is directed by Zhang Weike and stars Hu Yitian, Zhang Yunlong and Zhang Xinyu. It tells the story of lawyer Si Tuyan, Sergeant Luo Shaochuan and teacher Zhou Mowan, who through a series of coincidences, meets in Eastern Moscow-Harbin and forms a detective team during the Republican era. Together, they find themselves uncovering a major conspiracy.

iQIYI brings the reimagination of eight of Agatha Christie's most iconic murder cases to life in its latest original drama Checkmate (民国大侦探). The brand new series is directed by Zhang Weike (My Roommate is a Detective), stars Hu Yitian (胡一天), Leon Zhang (张云龙)  and Viann Zhang (张馨予), set in Harbin back in the Republican-era, adding an exotic touch of history when topped with mystery. Checkmate (民国大侦探) marks the world's first official Chinese-language television adaptation of Agatha Christie's works, and uncovers some of the detective fan's favourite cases including Murder on the Orient Express in its opening episode.

Yan Situ (played by Hu Yitian) is an extremely perceptive young man who becomes a detective after losing his previous law firm job as he refuses to bow down to authority when they asked him to turn a blind eye to a murder case. He will be joined by Luo Shaochuan (portrayed by Zhang Yunlong), a wealthy sergeant who befriends Yan Situ during a murder case where the latter lost his job; and Zhou Mowan (portrayed by Zhang Xinyu), a teacher. The trio, together with others, meets through a series of coincidences and decides to form a detective team together to solve a series of cases. But what might look like disconnected cases might actually just be one piece of the final puzzle.

About the author

Adriana Rosati

On paper I am an Italian living in London, in reality I was born and bread in a popcorn bucket. I've loved cinema since I was a little child and I’ve always had a passion and interest for Asian (especially Japanese) pop culture, food and traditions, but on the cinema side, my big, first love is Hong Kong Cinema. Then - by a sort of osmosis - I have expanded my love and appreciation to the cinematography of other Asian countries. I like action, heroic bloodshed, wu-xia, Shaw Bros (even if it’s not my specialty), Anime, and also more auteur-ish movies. Anything that is good, really, but I am allergic to rom-com (unless it’s a HK rom-com, possibly featuring Andy Lau in his 20s)"
